Maharana Mewar Research Institute

Invaluable archival material is stored in the basement of the Maharana Mewar Research Institute and funds are being targeted for its long-term preservation. A plan is underway to modernise the interior of the Institute and have the archives catalogued and digitised.

The present custodian of the House of Mewar donated his historical collection to the institute. This is a significant resource for research scholars and academicians and some have even accessed these archives as prime material for their research work.

As part of the background research for the MMCF - Getty Project, about 250 maps and 15 sets of Bahidas (daily records of the Mewar rulers handwritten in Mewari language) in the Maharana Mewar Research Institute have been digitised, interpreted and studied in great detail.

Relevant historical texts narrating the historical development of the palace form were used to outline the major phases for the evolution of the The City Palace.

A few maps recording the changes made in the palace during the last century have been useful in revealing the history of repair and alteration up to the present day.

The maps and manuscripts also revealed the changes in the surrounding geographical context of the hills and the lake with time.

These maps and manuscripts are invaluable resources on the art, architecture, history, administration and culture of Mewar.
